On November 27, 2023, the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality officially launched the Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP). This strategic document that outlines the actions and targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to climate change impacts is one of the most awaited outcomes of the EU4 Energy Transition: Covenant of Mayors in Western Balkans and Türkiye project implemented by Central Project Management Agency (CPMA) and German Agency for International Cooperation GmbH.
During the historic event, the Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality revealed the vision for the city’s sustainable energy and climate goals. The SECAP aims to use more sustainable energy in the city, reduce carbon footprint and control greenhouse gas emission. It sets strategic goals and steps to combat climate change, includes education and awareness projects for community involvement, and foresees specific actions to lessen emissions and adapt to changes.
Ms. Rasa Suraučienė Deputy director of CPMA extended her gratitude to international and national experts acknowledging their contributions to this ambitious project and significant journey.
Ms. Daiva Matonienė, the project leader in Türkiye, noted the critical role of Istanbul SECAP in achieving a substantial reduction in CO2 emissions and emphasized the power of collaboration.
It is with great pride that we collectively navigate this sustainable path, meeting global commitments, and fostering a more resilient, green and environmentally responsible Istanbul.
