Ukrainian and Lithuanian Experts to Shape the Future of School Reconstruction in Ukraine

On October 5th and 6th, in Vilnius, Central Project Management Agency, Ukrainian and Lithuanian experts in architecture and education, along with participants from state institutions and NGOs, will come together for an immersive workshop. This interdisciplinary event marks the beginning of the much-awaited open international architectural competition. The competition aims at creating and selecting the best project design for the “Future School for Ukraine.”

“Future School for Ukraine” is a pioneering initiative led by the Lithuanian Government, with the goal to deliver a practical solution for rebuilding Ukraine’s educational infrastructure. As part of the “Co-create Future of Ukraine” program, it aims to create a high-quality technical design school project, ready for a quick construction start, eliminating potential delays, and making it more appealing to potential donors.

The technical design project will be developed during an international architectural competition where the winner will be chosen for the best-elaborated solution, meeting the interests and needs of Ukrainian society. The competition will create, test, and promote an inclusive, transparent, and democratic process for obtaining the best architectural design for a public building in Ukraine.

“Before an architectural competition brief is put together, we have to know what kind of a school Ukraine wants and needs – and we use a format of a workshop to discuss it.” – says Rūta Leitanaitė, a Board member of Architects Association of Lithuania and the coordinator of the project “Future school for Ukraine”.

During the two days workshop participants will discuss various aspects – architectural, educational, social, environmental, economic – of a new paradigm for schools in Ukraine. Based on the workshop’s findings, a set of recommendations for evaluation criteria and a draft program for an architectural competition will be compiled.

“With €500,000 allocated by the Development cooperation and humanitarian aid fund, visionaries of both Ukrainian and Lithuanian nations have got an opportunity to create an innovative “School of the Future for Ukraine” project”. This standard technical design will save resources and precious time to restore the education process for Ukrainian children. Being on the ground in Ukraine since 2014, we will leverage our expertise creating the best working solutions in the sector.” – says Artūras Žarnovskis, Co Create Future of Ukraine program manager.

An open international architectural competition is expected to be announced at the end of the year 2023.
