Aim of the project

To strengthen complex rehabilitation (medical, psychosocial and social) services in Ukraine. 

Project activities and status

  1. Organisation of trainings per needs of rehabilitation centres under the Programme aimed at improving and development of the complex rehabilitation services;
  2. Assisting in establishment of the Training Centre in Lviv rehabilitation centre;
  3. Improvement of psychosocial and social rehabilitation;
  4. Standardization of innovative rehabilitation services for maintaining an objective assessment of the rehabilitation services provision.

Since 2024 the project partner, the Human rights center for military personnel and veterans “PRYNCYP,” conducted analyses and research on areas for improvement in rehabilitation services: 

  • comprehensive analysis of key stakeholders in the healthcare sector of Ukraine, detailing their roles in improving rehabilitation services.  
  • analysis of educational needs of rehabilitation teams through interviews with key healthcare professionals, focusing on both hard and soft skills.  
  • a national study on peer support in the rehabilitation in Ukraine developing set of recommendations. 
  • a study on provision of psychological support for Service Members of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, implemented with Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Center of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, in cooperation with the Psychological Support Department of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine. 

Continued professional development trainings for Ukrainian specialists are being implemented according to the coordinated plan for 2024–2026. Already completed trainings include:  

  • Three intensive training series on comprehensive patient rehabilitation for multidisciplinary rehabilitation teams in Ukraine covering rehabilitation after burn injuries, blast injuries and complications after spinal cord damage. 
  • Four visits to Lithuania for the team leads and specialists for thematic trainings on rehabilitation of speech and language therapy, rehabilitation after brain injury, aquatic physiotherapy training, a manual therapy course in Mulligan™ concept and training for rehabilitation nurses, covering 35 specialists in total. 
  • Targeted trainings for specialists in Ukraine in various fields of rehabilitation, including for mental health specialists, covering 150 specialists in total. Brining, among other, international expertise in physiotherapy from International Maitland Teachers Association (IMTA), and in psychological trauma diagnosis and treatment from experts of Primo Levi Centre (Paris). 

Additionally,  from March 2025 CPVA is providing technical assistance for the Rehabilitation Center “Unbroken” in Lviv focused on the quality control and process management in rehabilitation services, which includes:  

  • Initial assessment and analysis of rehabilitation processes in the center (completed); 
  • Mapping of rehabilitation process and drafting of rehabilitation process standard operating procedure, and other standard forms (completed); 
  • Study visits to Lithuania for the best practices and a session on developing the center’s quality control indicators (KPIs) and improvement plan (completed); 
  • Change management support with monitoring of improvements (ongoing).  

From September 2025, technical assistance for Zhytomyr Rehabilitation Centre focused on quality control and process management in rehabilitation services is ongoing, includes: 

  • Initial assessment and analysis of rehabilitation processes in the center (completed); 
  • Mapping of rehabilitation process and drafting of rehabilitation process standard operating procedure, and other standard forms (completed); 
  • Development of the center’s quality control indicators (KPIs) and improvement plan (ongoing).
