Projects financed by the national budget

Developing and testing a model for a patient transport service

The aim of the project is to create the preconditions for the organisation and provision of a new free patient transport service in Lithuania.

This service is designed to get patients to the treatment facility and back home. Depending on the patient’s condition, the transport service is provided by regular, adapted or specialised transport. The car can carry one or several patients at the same time.

The service is intended for individuals:

  • who have an incapacity for work, disability or special needs level of 55% or less and are entitled to a premium for reimbursable medicines due to insufficient income;
  • for people aged 75 and over who are entitled to a premium for reimbursable medicines because of insufficient income;
  • for people who need the service for medical reasons. The doctor decides whether the patient needs a transport service for medical reasons.

To book a transport service, a patient must first obtain a referral, make an appointment with the doctor, then call and book transport service, receive a confirmation by SMS and wait for a car at a selected time.

Project target group:

Residents of the Republic of Lithuania (whose main need is better access to specialised personal healthcare services), healthcare professionals and other professionals working in the field of organisation and provision of transport services (whose main need is better conditions for the provision of transport services).

Project contractor: Ambulance service. The project is implemented in the Kaunas region, with participation of 22 partners – 14 municipal institutions authorised to provide transport services.
